Out of Oz by Gregory Maguire

out of oz

Out of Oz is the last book in the Wicked series. I really had to power through because I can’t leave a series unfinished! There were some parts of this book that were just baffling, so there are spoilers ahead!

Spoiler #1

Read Wicked, then stop. It only goes downhill from there.

Spoiler #2

Rain’s boyfriend becomes a female?! What even is that?! And it only happens after they have sex? Homegirl was barely coherent enough to speak to other people nicely. Damnit Tip.

Spoiler #3

Trism is alive?! We just had to come back to that storyline, didn’t we? He was in the book for such a short amount of time too. He very easily could have been left out.

The Issues

I’m sorry, Mr. Maguire, but this was a very rambling story. It felt a bit like the great traveling book again. How many times is this crowd going to walk all over Oz? At one point, the group splits in half. We follow Rain’s story line for a bit, and then jump over to the other group. However, both groups must fast forward many years (or else Mr. Maguire wrote Rain as becoming sexually active around the age of 12-13), but it wasn’t clear.

We spend 3/4 of the book on these great journeys across Oz. Then, within the last couple of chapters, dragons come and actually destroy the Emerald City. Burn it to the ground. Then, the sorceress magically gets to the EC quickly and tries to take over. Then she fails to turn Liir back into his human form (from an elephant) and the EC triumphs over her because Ozma has returned.

I mean, a lot of those words would only make sense if you read the books, but still. That’s a hot mess. I get really bothered when I’m reading a book, and I don’t know what kind of issue they’re trying to resolve or thing they’re trying to achieve. I definitely felt bothered with the plot line of Out of Oz.
