Make the Most of Prime Day

Amazon has announced that their annual sales event, Prime Day, will run July 12-13, 2022. In the off chance that you have been living under a rock for the last five or so years, Prime Day is a HUGE sales event all across the Amazon website. There are deals on everything from Alexa devices to books to clothing to food. The event has become so popular that other major retailers (like Walmart and Target) have jumped on the bandwagon to offer massive deals these days.

If you don’t know what you’re doing, it’s definitely possible to miss out on the deals you’re looking for, or to notice that it’s not as great of a deal as you may think. I have worked with Amazon sellers for years and know the ins and outs of Prime Day. I’m sharing my secrets to make sure you get the most of this shopping holiday.

Prime Day deals are only available to shoppers with an Amazon Prime subscription. There are so many different variations of Prime, AND there’s a free 30-day trial. Thus, if you sign up for Prime Day, you can cancel before the trial period ends, get the benefits of Prime Day, and not get charged for it. Just remember to set a reminder on your calendar to cancel!

In my work with Amazon sellers, I know all the sneaky tricks they try. One of the most frequent tricks I see is increasing the price leading up to Prime Day to make their discount look more impressive.

For example, a seller may have a portable power bank for $25 on a regular basis. They may increase the price to $30 with a markdown to $20 to make it look like a better deal. You think you’re getting $10 off when you’re really only getting $5 off. It’s still nice to save, but this is something that happens quite frequently.

If you’re in the market for things, go ahead and start browsing now. Add them to your wishlist! Bookmark them on your computer. Create a spreadsheet. Whatever you need to do, start browsing now. I do recommend a wishlist because you can see the fluctuation in price in your Amazon account since you added the item to your list.

Amazon puts so much into the shopping holiday that you can start earning Prime Day credits now! They offer up to $60 in credit if you purchase from a group of items (often small businesses and/or gift cards) in the days leading up to the sale.

Don’t get pulled in by the discounts.

It’s so easy to just scroll through the deals and want to buy all of the things. Do you really need all of the things though?

I look at an InstantPot every Prime Day/Cyber 5. They are always marked down at least 50%. Pinterest is full of recipes designed for the InstantPot. Who wouldn’t want one?! However, I take it out of my cart every year because I don’t need it just because it’s a good deal.

When I tell you everything is on sale, I mean that EVERYTHING is on sale. That’s why it’s good to shop early, and focus on what you want/need.

Shop for the holidays.

Whenever I think about Prime Day, I think it’s the more selfish shopping holiday. Most often, we associate Cyber Five (the time between Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday) with the start of the holiday season. However, no one said you can’t shop for the holidays in July! You may need to find somewhere to store these soon-to-be gifts for five months, but the savings could be worth it!

One hack a former boss of mine shared: Buy gift cards at Prime Day. Often, there will be deals like “Buy $40, get $10 free.” You just got $50 of gift card for $40. Around the holidays, this is a huge win for gifts. Additionally, it can help you stretch your dollar a little bit farther. Maybe you buy Target gift cards on discount now to then use for holiday shopping later!

Remember to shop around a bit.

Other retailers have jumped on this summer shopping extravaganza, trying to capitalize on the influx of shoppers. Thus, you can find similar (if not identical or BETTER) deals from other retailers. If you couple this with cash back from Rakuten (see below), then you may be able to get the item(s) for cheaper elsewhere.

Want to get more from shopping online? Sign up for Rakuten! Get a sign on bonus, and cash back from THOUSANDS of stores, both online and in-store.

Shop Amazon Smile.

This goes without saying! So many people will just go to Amazon.com and call it a day. However, let’s make Amazon give some money back. Start your shopping at smile.amazon.com, choose a charity, and make Amazon share! The shopping experience is 100% identical, except all those purchases actually do some good.

If you’re going to do some shopping this Prime Day (July 12-13, 2022), be sure to shop smart!
