Artemis by Andy Weir

For starters, thank you Alli for being my Secret Santa and gifting me Artemis! It has been on my #TBR for a while now. Alli is also a member of our company book club. It’s my first read by Andy Weir, but now I definitely want to grab The Martian.

The Story

Artemis takes place in Artemis, the first city on the moon. It’s a community of wealth and the working class, with little in between. The city is technically a Kenyan enterprise, but ethnic communities popped up all over, mostly around working skills.

We spend Artemis with Jazz. She’s a lower class worker in Artemis, working toward a promotion to an EVA master (gets to lead space/moon walks and such). In the beginning of the novel, she fails her test. We then find out she’s also a porter, delivering packages to people all over Artemis, with a side job of smuggling things in from Earth.

Then, she gets a job offer she simply can’t refuse, but that’s when everything goes south.

The Mystery

The second half of the book was pretty stressful. Though, really, most of the book was. I was baffled that someone who was so intelligent would turn to such lengths, though people will do just about anything for money.

I got lost a little bit in all of the talk of science and welding and such, but it wasn’t so bad. Overall, Artemis was really good! I gave it four stars on Goodreads, I think. It was one of my favorite things in July!
