Friday Five: January 2020

january

Here’s to a new year! Somehow, January has been the longest month ever. We started in the middle of a week and now it’s taken us a full week to end it? Seriously, it feels like January has lasted at least 7 weeks. However, I’ve found some real favorites that I just can’t wait to share with you!

Hans Zimmer

What? One of my favorite things is a composer? Hell yes! Hans Zimmer is generally in my rotation of nighttime reading music. One night, I heard a song playing that was just so beautiful. Turns out the Hans Zimmer band goes on tour. No joke, there is an INCREDIBLE show. I found a recorded version of it on YouTube, and the album on Spotify, and I’ve been listening to it on repeat for weeks.

Gratitude Journal

If you remember, I’m working hard to develop healthy habits in 2020. For January, I am spending just a few minutes every night to reflect on three things I am grateful for. Sometimes it’s a person. Sometimes it’s wine.

The Reading Corner

Oh my wonderful reading corner. I’ve had this weird corner in my house since I moved in, and I hadn’t figured out what to do with it. Earlier in 2019, I found a chair that I absolutely LOVED at Ikea. A nice wingback chair and an accompanying ottoman.

I’ve always wanted a library in my home, but it just wasn’t quite attainable here. I only have two bedrooms and I sleep in one while the other is my office. My reading corner was my happy medium. It’s just a chair tucked in next to my bookshelf, but it’s the best spot. It’s also where you’ll find me most evenings.

Sunshine

This one seems a little odd, but hear me out. We have had such a dreary month. It has rained for days on end. Then, you get a “dry,” overcast day, and it starts raining again. Poor Olivia hasn’t gotten to go out and chase the shadows in the backyard. We’ve had a couple sunny days in a row, and I just chase the sunshine. I’ll work in my living room because it gets sun in the morning. I go out in two coats to just stand in my backyard and soak up the sun. You don’t realize what an effect it has on you until you realize you haven’t had it.

Reading

Yes, reading could technically count as one of my favorite things every month. However, I’m being less “restrictive” for my reading this year. My goal is to read for 20,000 minutes in 2020. My Goodreads goal is 75 books (which may have been a little ambitious). I’m not limiting myself to only reading new books, which I have the last couple of years. If I want to read Harry Potter that’s totally cool. If I want to go and pick a random book off the shelf at the library, that’s cool too.
