Build Your Own Book Nook

For as long as I can remember, I have always wanted a library in my home. Beauty and the Beast was never one of my favorite Disney movies, but, man, was I jealous of the library Belle was given. There’s just something so comforting about being surrounded by pages.

When I was touring houses before I purchased, there were a couple that came with enough space to have that library. When I bought my house, I knew the library wasn’t quite going to happen. Then, it hit me one day: a book nook! It’s like a mini library with comfortable seating and books. I had an empty-ish corner, so I decided to make it happen.

The Pieces of a Book Nook

Plenty of books. Yes, you only read one or two (or more if you’re crazy) books at a time, but you just need to be surrounded by books in your book nook. For me, they almost act as dampeners to distractions and help me focus on my reading. Be sure to check out my recommendations to start your collection!

Comfortable seating. If you’re going to spend as much time in your book nook as I do, you definitely need the best chair. If you search for “book nook” on Pinterest, there are a ton of options where benches were built into windows or whatever, so do what works for you. I happened to fall in love with this chair a few months ago, and I just new it would be perfect.

Adequate lighting. Reading can strain your eyes, so it’s imperative to get good lighting for you. My nook is close to a window, so I get natural light during the day. I also have a lamp close by for the evenings.

A blanket. Grab something super cozy. There’s nothing better in the world than curling up with a good book and a warm blanket…well, plus or minus a glass of wine.

Now, it doesn’t need to be a book nook (though it’s totally what I would recommend). Maybe you’re more creative and want a painting nook. Perhaps you love to needlepoint (is that what they still call it?) and need a nook for that. It’s an absurd trend that men get “man caves,” so I think it’s perfectly acceptable to create your own nook in your home.
